Who We Are

What We Believe

At FBCOKC we believe the Bible is the written Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit and understood through Jesus Christ, the Living Word. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of all who come to him in believing faith. The church, as understood at FBCOKC, is a body of believers who come together for worship and training, and go out together on mission to our world, near and far. We strive to follow Jesus’ example in loving and serving all persons, knowing that in this we are serving God. We believe that Scripture teaches us how to live in our world and with others. We value the priesthood of the believer, the autonomy of the local church and the equality of women in ministry.  FBCOKC is committed to the theological stance expressed in the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message.

What kind of church has God called us to be?

Worship Rich:

We want First Baptist Church to be a community where people can find hope in Jesus through scripture, music, message and prayer.  The music at FBCOKC embraces both traditional and contemporary styles. Whether we are singing a familiar hymn or a chorus written in recent days, our goal is always to have a vital encounter with God through worship.

Unapologetically Urban:

Located in Midtown, our church sits in the ideal location to reach across generational, economic and social boundaries in the name of Christ. We are committed to serving our neighborhood through many venues, including worship, Bible study, CareForOKC’s food and clothing ministry, and Good Shepherd Ministries’ free medical and dental clinics.

A Moderate Baptist Voice:

Our congregation has affirmed our Baptist heritage, rooted in the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message that was crafted under the direction of Dr. Herschel Hobbs, a former pastor of this church. We still find value in the historic Baptist tenants of believer's baptism, the autonomy of the local church, the priesthood of every believer, the divine inspiration of the Bible, and religious liberty.

Intentionally Intergenerational:

In too many congregations, the generations become naturally divided over worship style, congregational focus, or facility layout. At FBCOKC, we bring the generations together through intentional worship design and by offering intergenerational mission and ministry opportunities. From preschoolers to senior adults, every age group brings its own distinctiveness; we believe we all have much to contribute and much to learn from one another.

A Place Where Men and Women are Equally Valued in Leadership:

There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female,
for you are all one in Christ Jesus. - Galatians 3:28

We believe this passage speaks the truth and gladly embraces men and women as equal in the eyes of God and equally qualified for congregational leadership as both members and ministers.

Serving the World:

Our world is moving to Oklahoma City, and we see that expressed in the faces of the refugees and immigrants now making the city their home. First Baptist is actively engaged in work among the refugee community and serves as the home of several global congregations.
